Urea space and urea absorption in chronic post-hemorragie anemic men
Shin Dong-Hoon
Abstract
The estimation of the total body water, using urea on the normal human subjects, was performed by Macauce and Widdowson(l) satisfactorily. Painter(2) reported that the available water for the dilution of urea in dogs was in a reasonable range.
There are numerous reports, using the urea method, studied on the hydropic and malnutrited human subjects(3-6).But, owing to the slower distribution of
urea into the edematous fluid and for other uncertain reasons, the reliable measurement could hardly be available for such subjects. Gopalan et al(4) and Holmes, et al(5) measured the total body water of malnutrited and edematous subjects by the urea method, and revealed enormously large values, 87-90% of total body weight. On the other hand, Strikantia et al(6) reported that the urea space was favorably comparable to the antipyrine space in the malnutrited subjects.
In this experiments, the total body water of chronic post-hemorrhagic anemic subjects was measured by the urea method, and the values obtained were generally larger than that revealed by the D20 method or by the antipyrine method on similar subjects. These larger values of the body water, estimated by the urea. method, appear to be attributable primarilly to the retarded absorption of urea, and it seems that to check the pattern of the absorption of urea from the aim enatry tract is important problem to evaluate the validity of the urea method in the measurements of the total body water of chronic anemic and malnutrited subjects.
The absorption of urea from the alimentary tract is the first process when it is spread throughout the body water. To be dissolved evenly into the whole body water urea must penetrate the epithelial membrane of the alimentary tract. Capillary walls and cell membranes. The transfer of urea across these various membranes is explained as passive process. In this experiment, the absorption of urea was studied and so far as the tubular reabsorption of urea could be considered.
